Hiking Elopement at Passo Giau

EUROPEAN ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER | SHAWNA RAE

Elopement in passo giau

Originally, we planned to hike all the way to Rifugio Nuvolau for sunset. But as any mountain couple learns quickly, flexibility is part of the adventure. Circumstances meant we couldn’t make it all the way up on time. Instead, we hiked part of the trail, got a taste of the alpine views, and then shifted plans to catch the golden hour at one of the Dolomites’ most iconic sunset spots: Passo Giau.

And honestly? It couldn’t have been better.

What stood out even more was how lovely it was to simply spend time with her. Shawna is not only a talented photographer, but also a genuinely warm person who is clearly passionate about her work.

Their Story

Marina and Viktor live in Germany now, but both are originally from Ukraine. Their families thought they were a little wild for wanting to hike on their wedding day. And in some ways, they were right. Hiking boots instead of heels, trail dust on the hem of a dress, mountain winds in their hair... but that’s exactly what felt right to them. To balance family traditions, they hosted a small courthouse ceremony back home with just their parents and siblings. Their Dolomites elopement was just for them.

How I Shoot

When I photograph elopements like Marina & Viktor’s, my goal is to tell the story as it unfolds: candid, honest, adventurous. Whether we’re hiking to a rifugio, chasing blue hour reflections, or pivoting last-minute to a new spot, I’m there to guide, photograph, and celebrate with you.

Planning Notes & Tips for Dolomites Elopements

  1. Best Season: May is incredible if you want fewer tourists. The tradeoff is some huts and lifts may still be closed, so flexibility is key.
  2. Crowds: By July and August, Passo Giau can be very busy. Sunrise or shoulder seasons are your best bet for privacy.
  3. Backup Plans: Always have one! Mountains have their own timelines, and shifting locations (like we did here) can make your day even better.

"We had our wedding photo shoot in South Tyrol, near Parcheggio Passo Giau, with Shawna — and we were absolutely thrilled with the experience.
All communication beforehand was via email and phone, and Shawna was always quick to respond and helpful with all my questions. She knows the area extremely well and has a fantastic library of scenic locations. We fully trusted her expertise in choosing the spot — and it turned out to be the perfect decision.

During the shoot, Shawna proved to be a true professional. She guided us gently, helped with poses and made us feel confident and natural in front of the camera.

What stood out even more was how lovely it was to simply spend time with her. Shawna is not only a talented photographer, but also a genuinely warm person who is clearly passionate about her work. That passion came through in every moment of our photo session.

Shawna, thank you so much for capturing these special moments for us — we will treasure them forever!"
