This is more than just knowing what is or isn’t vegan- it can (unfortunately) be controversial
Planning a wedding is already a wild ride of logistics, timelines, and decision-making. But when you layer in a commitment to a vegan, low-impact lifestyle, it can easily feel like you’re swimming against the current. For a long time, the wedding industry treated “eco-friendly” or “plant-based” as a sacrifice, a compromise where you traded luxury and style for ethics.
I’m here to tell you that narrative is completely dead.
You can absolutely have an epic, high-end, deeply aesthetic wedding day that aligns perfectly with your values. Whether you’re running away to an alpine peak for a minimalist elopement or hosting a dinner party under the stars, making it a vegan celebration is all about intentional curation.
Here is exactly how to build a modern, sustainable, plant-based wedding from the ground up.

The Food: Elevating Plant-Based Dining
Let’s tackle the biggest hurdle first: the menu. Your wedding meal shouldn’t just be a standard catering dish with the meat removed. It should be a standout culinary experience that leaves your non-vegan guests talking for months.
The Cake: Vegan baking has evolved dramatically. You can get flawless, multi-tiered wedding cakes made with oat milk, organic local fruits, and rich vegan buttercreams that look and taste completely premium.
Move Beyond the Afterthought: Look for caterers who specialize in plant-based cuisine or are genuinely excited to innovate. Think seasonal risotto with wild truffles, open-fire roasted heirloom vegetables, or modern, multi-course tasting menus.
The Wine & Bar: A lot of couples forget that not all alcohol is inherently vegan due to traditional fining agents (like gelatin or isinglass). Work with your bartender or venue to source explicitly vegan-certified organic wines, local craft beers, and creative botanical cocktails.

The Fashion: Cruelty-Free & Conscious Wardrobe
Bridal fashion is notoriously heavy on hidden animal products. Traditional luxury often leans into silk, wool, leather, and pearls. Sourcing an ethical wardrobe simply requires a little extra reading of the labels.
- The Gown & Veil: Look for beautiful alternatives like high-quality organic cotton, linen, Tencel, or high-end synthetic tulles and chiffons. Many modern designers are explicitly labeling their collections as vegan-friendly.
- The Suit: Skip the heavy wool or cashmere suits and opt for structured linen, breathable organic cotton, or sleek bamboo-blend tailoring.
- Accessories & Shoes: The market for vegan luxury footwear is booming. From sleek faux-leather loafers to stunning bridal heels made from apple or pineapple leather, you don’t have to sacrifice style to keep your footwear cruelty-free. Double-check your watch straps, belts, and the backing of structural details like ties.
I found a wonderful article here from Good on You to help you find a sustainable, and most likely vegan, wedding dress.

Decor & Flora: Sourcing with Intention
The greenest decor is the kind that doesn’t end up in a dumpster at midnight. When designing the physical look of your day, think about the lifecycle of every item you bring in.
- Zero-Waste Florals: Ask your florist to prioritize locally grown, seasonal blooms and to completely ban the use of floral foam (which is a toxic microplastic that doesn’t biodegrade). Alternatively, potted plants, fresh herbs, and living greenery can be replanted or gifted to guests after the celebration.
- Conscious Stationery: If you aren’t opting for fully digital invitations, look into recycled cotton paper, seed paper that guests can actually plant in their gardens, or soy-based inks.
- Rethink the Details: Focus on intentional minimalism. Instead of purchasing cheap single-use plastic signage or favor trinkets, invest in atmosphere—like dynamic ambient lighting, reusable glassware, or vintage rentals that bring natural texture to the space.

Vegan Agrivilla I Pini (Tuscany, Italy)
Tucked into the historic rolling hills of San Gimignano, this 16th-century bio-vegan estate is an absolute dream for an intimate, old-world Italian celebration. Palmaïa: The House of AïA (Riviera Maya, Mexico)
For couples dreaming of a high-end coastal escape, Palmaïa is an all-inclusive luxury wellness enclave nestled perfectly between the Mayan jungle and the Caribbean Sea. Unlike traditional resorts where plant-based food is an afterthought, Palmaïa operates with a “progressive plant-based” philosophy—meaning exquisite, creative vegan food is the absolute default at all five of their on-site restaurants. They specialize in intimate beach ceremonies and private deck gatherings, making it a flawless tropical sanctuary for a small, mindful destination wedding.
Mother Earth Vegan Hotel (Tamarindo, Costa Rica)
Tucked away in one of the most vibrant surf towns in Costa Rica, this is a boutique, 100% vegan hidden gem. It is completely powered by solar energy and features a dedicated zero-waste water management system. With only a handful of modern, eco-chic rooms, you can easily buy out the entire property for an exclusive, highly private celebration. Think rooftop wellness studio gatherings, sunset vows directly on the sand, and an unforgettable plant-based reception dinner crafted by their acclaimed poolside restaurant.
Koukoumi Hotel (Mykonos, Greece)
If your vision leans heavily into minimalist, Mediterranean luxury, Koukoumi is the first and only fully vegan hotel anchored on the cliffs of Mykonos. From the completely cruelty-free suites (no leather, feather, or silk fabrics anywhere in the architecture) to their spectacular magnesium-filtered pool, the property breathes authentic relaxation. Their kitchen delivers a masterclass in raw and cooked traditional Greek gastronomy, reimagined for a modern, sophisticated palate—perfect for a chic, intimate elopement dinner under the stars.
Expanding Your Horizons
While these particular sanctuaries offer an entirely immersive, worry-free environment from check-in to check-out, the global landscape for ethical travel is expanding rapidly. Beautiful, plant-based boutique spaces and eco-resorts are popping up in almost every corner of the world- from the lush rainforests of Bali to the quiet coastlines of Portugal. Even if your absolute dream venue isn’t strictly 100% vegan by default, a growing number of luxury properties worldwide are incredibly eager to tailor their entire space, menu, and experience to fit a sustainable, cruelty-free vision. All it takes is the right vendor team to bring it to life.

Assembling an Ethical Vendor Team
Your vendors are the heartbeat of your day. It’s such a bonus if you can hire fully-vegan vendors, such as your photographer (might be biased, but throwing my name in the draw here as a great option). Even if your vendors aren’t personally vegan, they should respect and enthusiastically support your vision.
When interviewing your team, don’t be afraid to ask how they approach other sustainability aspects as well. Do they run a paperless business? Do they offset their travel carbon footprints? For a wedding to feel genuinely cohesive, surrounding yourself with professionals who value the planet just as much as you do makes all the difference in the world.
At the end of the day, a vegan wedding isn’t about rules or restrictions. It’s a beautiful opportunity to strip away the unnecessary noise of the traditional wedding industry, focus on what truly matters, and celebrate your connection in a way that leaves the world a little better than you found it.

Gifting Back: Commemorating Your Day with Impact
If traditional registries and single-use wedding favors don’t sit right with you, consider completely shifting the narrative. Instead of gifting your guests tiny trinkets that often get left on reception tables, more and more intentional couples are opting for philanthropic favors.
Setting up a donation fund in honor of your marriage is an incredible way to kick off your life together. You can invite your guests to contribute to a cause close to your hearts, or make a lump-sum donation yourself as a thank-you to everyone who traveled to celebrate you. Whether it’s supporting an animal sanctuary that rescues farm wildlife, funding global reforestation projects, or backing ocean cleanups, aligning your wedding with a meaningful charity turns your celebration into a catalyst for actual, positive change.

Don’t worry about what others think!
Ignore outside social pressures. When I told my dad I was having a fully vegan micro wedding, he said, “No, you have to have at LEAST steak and potatoes for everyone.” First off, potatoes are very much vegan, thanks for that dad. Second, no I do not have to have steak. So I hired Chickpea Catering in Vancouver, and you know what, everyone loved the food. It was super tasty, I got to impress my closest friends and family, and I got to stick to my values. And for the most part, people won’t even judge you, it’s in your head, so don’t worry about it 😉
By following these tips, you can have a wonderful wedding that aligns with your beliefs and values. You can show people that it’s not hard to be vegan and it can be just as, if not MORE delicious than animal-based foods! Remember to enjoy the day and leave a lasting memory for your guests that a whole wedding can be both vegan and delicious.
