Top 5 Places for an Epic Mountain Elopement in Europe in 2024

Last updated: 13 March 2024

Eloping in the mountains is a great choice, and here's where you can go.

If you're an adventurous couple seeking a unique and breathtaking location for your elopement, consider the mountains of Europe. From the dramatic peaks of the Alps to the rugged landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, Europe offers countless mountain ranges for a stunning elopement. Here you can find the best places to have your unforgettable mountain elopement in Europe.

1. Elope in the Swiss Alps:

With some of the highest peaks in Europe, the Swiss Alps offer a stunning backdrop for a mountain elopement. You've got so many regions and backdrops to choose from, you won't be disappointed.

Start by looking into the Jungfrau region. There, you've got gems like Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, with towering peaks like Eiger surrounding you. It's very touristy, so make sure your photographer can help you navigate through the crowds, otherwise your elopement might not be as quiet as you'd hoped.

Your photographer should also know where is good for a long photo session, and where to stop by for just a few photos. For example, Lauterbrunnen only has a few very iconic (aka drop-dead gorgeous) spots that are certainly worth a stop off, but you shouldn't spend too much time there because there aren't that many photo opportunities. I know all the secret spots, so feel free to send me a message about this.

Interlaken is another place worth mentioning. The lake is really pristine, and the surrounding mountains and villages set the tone. Very cozy Swiss vibes!

Breithorn is another gem, and great for those who don't want to hike too much but still want that up-close mountain beauty. You can take the cable car very high, and from there you can get gorgeous views of the famous Matterhorn.

If you want to get even closer to the Matterhorn, then go to Zermatt. You can get so close... In the photos, it looks like you could touch it! Or, almost, at least. There is a really epic spot with a beautiful lake and one of the grandest views of all time.

2. Elope in the Italian Dolomites:

The jagged peaks and rugged beauty of the Dolomites make this mountain range in Italy a perfect place for a super unique and adventurous elopement. From the colourful mountain lakes to the impressive rock formations, the Dolomites offer endless possibilities for an unforgettable elopement day.

I have a very extensive guide on how to elope in the Dolomites, so if it's your chosen place, I highly recommend you check it out here. So I won't go into too much detail in this post, but you can check out Cadini di Misurina, Lago di Braies, Alpe di Siusi, just to name a few. If you hire me, of course, I will go into more detail about where we could shoot and help you find the perfect spot for you, according to your wants and needs.

3. Elope in the French Alps:

The French Alps offer a romantic and picturesque setting for a mountain elopement. Whether you choose to exchange vows on a mountaintop overlooking Mont Blanc or in a charming alpine village, the French Alps offer stunning natural beauty and old-world charm.

Chamonix is a great place to start looking into your perfect location. There are so many hikes that are accessible by train, so it's easy to get around. And not only are there trains that get you to trailheads, there are also trains that will take you up the mountains, which can be good for those who don't want to hike much.

From Chamonix, you can easily get to Aiguille du Midi and Mer de Glace. From the centre, all you need to do is find the right lift/train station, and you're on your way!

If you want some water in your views, try Lac D’Annecy or Lac D’Allos. And there are so many more places out there!

4. Elope in the Bavarian Alps

Often forgotten, the German Alps are still just as stunning as their counterparts. With many high peaks, glacial lakes, and rolling hills to explore, you won't be disappointed if you choose Bavaria as your destination for your elopement.

You can look into places like Königssee, where you will find a lake surrounded by mountains and a cute church, especially beautiful in autumn. Also, definitely look into the Berchtesgaden National Park; it actually reminds me a bit of home (Canada), but with a very German touch when you look at the architecture.

Oberstdorf is particularly gorgeous in the winter. If you want to see the most iconic castle of Bavaria, base your elopement around Füssen.

5. Elope in the Austrian Alps:

Austria's majestic mountains offer a picturesque and romantic setting for an unforgettable mountain elopement. From the snow-capped peaks of the Tyrolean Alps to the crystal-clear lakes of the Salzkammergut, Austria's mountain landscapes provide endless possibilities for a beautiful and adventurous wedding day.

Innsbruck is a great place to start your journey, if you're looking into the Alps. If you want more jagged Dolomite peaks, check out Lienz. Not a lot of people know this, but the Dolomites are not exclusive to Italy, they are also in Austria, and they are just as gorgeous.

No matter which mountain range you choose, a mountain elopement in Europe is sure to be a breathtaking and unforgettable experience for you and your partner. Just be sure to do your research, plan ahead, and work with a trusted wedding planner to make your dream wedding day a reality.
