best places to elope in iceland

Last updated: July 20, 2025

Let's talk fire and ice.

So you’ve decided to elope in Iceland. Hell-freaking-YES.
But let's be real for a moment: you're not the only ones. So let's talk about some of the best places to elope in Iceland, and how to avoid the tourists.

Try saying that three times fast. Or...even just try to pronounce it once!

This place is unreal. Deep green canyon walls. River running below. Absolute cinematic masterpiece. And yet, still pretty under the radar.

What you should know: It’s gotten more popular lately (thanks to a few influencers), but with the right timing (and a solid Plan B nearby), it’s still a killer elopement spot. I’ll bring the snacks. You bring the vows.

You’ve probably seen this waterfall in a thousand posts: the one you can walk behind. It’s beautiful. And yes, it’s worth seeing. But eloping here at noon on a Saturday? Not recommended.

What you should know: I’ll help you get those “we had it all to ourselves” vibes without having to Photoshop out 40 tourists in yellow rain jackets. And if the crowds are too much, there’s another nearby waterfall (just a short trail away) that’s way more private, and honestly just as magical. Trust me, it’s a vibe.

That black sand and those dramatic basalt columns? Unreal. This is a solid "yes" if you want that moody coastal drama. But the sneaker waves and the constant stream of tourists can definitely kill the vibe if we don’t plan ahead.

What you should know: Tourists show up mid-morning and don’t leave until it’s dark. I’ll help you time it for low-traffic hours, or I’ll take you to a nearby beach with the same energy but way fewer footprints.

Also, you have to be careful here! Those waves can sneak up on you without warning, and take you out to sea, especially with a heavy wedding dress. So be with someone who knows how to play it safe, but still get amazing photos.

One of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland. She’s big. She’s bold. And yes, she’s popular. But if you want those epic waterfall photos, I’ve got timing down to a science, and I’ll guide you.

What you should know: It's stunning, but also a bus stop favorite. We’ll need to plan it right or skip it for a lesser-known waterfall nearby.

You're dreaming of waterfalls, black sand beaches, jaw-dropping cliffs, and maybe a cozy geothermal soak after saying your vows. But you're worried about all the tourists.

Iceland is stunning, and it’s no secret. Which means some of the most Instagram-famous spots are also the most crowded. That doesn't mean you should skip them entirely. It just means you need someone who knows when and how to go, or better yet, someone who can show you other equally wild and beautiful places that aren’t crawling with tour buses.

Hi, that’s me!

Let’s talk about some of the best elopement spots in Iceland, the ones you’ve seen in the photos, and why they’re worth it if you time it right. And then I’ll let you in on the secret: I know dozens of lesser-known gems where you can have space to breathe, laugh, and feel like you’re the only two people on the planet.

1. Skógafoss Waterfall

You want to know the best places to elope in Iceland, but you have some questions.

Icebergs drifting through a glassy lagoon, seals popping up for a peek, and a vibe that feels straight out of a dream. Jökulsárlón is the kind of place that makes you stop and go, “Wait... this is real?”

What you should know: It’s a popular stop, especially with the tour buses, but early mornings or off-season months can be incredibly peaceful. And if you’re into that “icy adventure elopement” feel without actually having to hike a glacier, this place brings all the drama, in the best way. Bonus: Diamond Beach is right across the road! You likely won't find any diamonds there during the warmer months, but off season can be full of them.

5. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Look, those big-name spots are famous for a reason. But if you're dreaming of something intimate, where it’s just you two and the landscape; that’s where I come in.

I've spent years scouting Iceland. I know where to go when the light hits just right. I know how to work around the tourist crowds, which roads are closed in bad weather, and where to find the kind of views that don’t show up in guidebooks.

You some private moments? Let me help you find those. Every story is different, so let me help you make a plan that suits you best. Whether it's going in off-season, shooting during the midnight sun, or finding a spot that hasn't been spotted by the influencers.

I’ve got you.

Let’s Talk About the Real Magic

Whether you’re into hiking elopements, moody coastlines, mountain views, or chasing the midnight sun, Iceland’s got it all. And I know how to turn it into a day that’s 100% yours.

Eloping here doesn’t have to feel like a photo shoot at a tourist stop. It can feel like the two of you doing something wild, real, and unforgettable.

So if you’re ready to ditch the stress, pack your boots, and get married in one of the most epic places on earth, I’d love to help you make it happen.

Let’s Make This Yours

You’ve seen it before: that pointy mountain with a waterfall in the foreground that looks straight out of a fantasy film. That’s Kirkjufell, and yes, it’s just as cool in real life.

What you should know: It’s a popular stop for good reason, but it’s not as overrun as the southern coast spots. If you want something iconic without elbowing for space, this is a great option. The surrounding peninsula also has some seriously underrated locations, so if you’re down for a little drive, I can show you a few quiet corners most tourists completely miss.
