If your dream wedding vision involves crisp mountain air, dramatic coastlines, and fresh breezes instead of sweating through your outfit in 38°C (100°F) heat, you are not alone. Finding a cool summer elopement location can be daunting as summer heatwaves across North America, Southern Europe, and Asia get wilder every single year, making traditional summer weddings feel more like a survival test than a romantic celebration.
Even worse? Summer heatwaves bring severe drought and dangerous wildfires. Blazing forest fires across the western US and Canada, Southern Europe, and Australia regularly lead to sudden road closures, hazardous air quality, evacuated venues, and thick smoke that completely ruins mountain views.
If you want to tie the knot between June and September without melting into a puddle or dodging smoke plumes, choosing the right cool summer elopement locations is essential.

Real Talk: Why I Am Shifting My Summer Schedule North
I am an adventure elopement photographer based close to Bolzano, Italy, right at the foot of the Dolomites. As I write this in August, 2026, we have already suffered through four separate brutal heatwaves this summer, totaling roughly 8 weeks of 36°C to 40°C (97°F–104°F) heat down here in the valley. I find it unbearable.
It has gotten so extreme world-wide that climate activists and meteorologists are campaigning to start officially naming heatwaves the way we name hurricanes. They want to name them after major fossil fuel companies like Shell, BP, and Chevron to hold big oil accountable.
Trying to shoot emotional, adventurous elopement photos in 40-degree heat (or risking smoke-filled skies from nearby wildfires) is not fun for couples. Not to mention, it’s getting too hot for me to physically work safely down south during mid-summer. That is why from July through August every year, I am officially sticking to the far North. You’ll find me in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland.
If you want to run away to cooler, smoke-free pastures anywhere in the world, here are the absolute best cool summer elopement locations to keep on your radar.

Option 1: Eloping in the Cool, Far North (Iceland, Greenland & The Faroe Islands)
When searching for cool summer elopement locations that guarantee zero forest fires, heading toward the Arctic Circle is the cheat code.
- Iceland: Expect cool summer temperatures around 10–15°C (50–59°F). You get endless daylight (hello, midnight sun!), mossy canyons, and massive glaciers, all while wearing cozy layers.
- The Faroe Islands: Perfect if you want dramatic sea cliffs, moody fog, and lush green fjords without tourist buses. Summer highs rarely cross 13°C (55°F), making it an absolute dream for crisp, ocean-fresh air.
- Greenland: The ultimate off-the-beaten-path flex. You can say your vows next to massive floating icebergs in Ilulissat or take a helicopter onto the Ice Sheet.

Option 2: Eloping in Northern Norway & The Lofoten Islands (What About the Bugs?) to Escape the Heatwaves and Fires
Northern Norway, especially the Lofoten Islands, is world-famous for jagged granite peaks rising straight out of turquoise arctic waters. Summer temperatures hover around a comfortable 12–18°C (53–64°F), and wildfires are virtually non-existent this far north.
Wait, are there tons of bugs in Northern Norway? I don’t want to swap the heatwaves and fires just to be bugged.
Pun intended. Here is the real scoop: The coastal islands (like Lofoten) are virtually bug-free thanks to salty ocean breezes! However, if you head inland toward the deep forests, lakes, or marshy tundras of Norwegian Lapland, mosquitoes can be brutal. As long as you stick to coastal ridges, fjords, and open mountain trails, bugs will not ruin your vibe.

Option 3: Eloping in the Cool, High Alpine Ranges (The Alps, Dolomites & North American Rockies)
If you love alpine lakes and dramatic spires, high mountain ranges around the globe are legendary. However, keep this in mind: Valley cities near these mountain ranges (like Bolzano, Geneva, and Denver) suffer heavily from heatwaves.
How to make high-altitude spots work as cool summer elopement locations:
- Get High Up: Skip the valley floors and plan your ceremony at high altitudes (above 2,000 meters / 6,500 feet).
- Stay in High Alpine Villages: Sleep in high-altitude mountain passes or alpine huts (rifugios) where evening temperatures drop 5-10°C.
- Watch Wildfire Risks: Lower-elevation pine forests in dry regions can burn during peak dry spells, so high-alpine rocky terrain above the treeline is always the safer, clearer bet.

Option 4: Chasing Winter in the Southern Hemisphere
If you want to skip summer completely, flip the map upside down! June through September is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, offering a true winter wonderland with zero heat and zero wildfire risk:
- Patagonia (Argentina & Chile): Exchange vows surrounded by snow-capped peaks, frozen alpine lakes, and dramatic wind-swept landscapes.
- New Zealand (South Island): Queenstown and Wanaka offer incredible winter elopement options, complete with snow-covered mountain heli-landings, cozy fireplace receptions, and glacier views. Fun fact, I lived in Queenstown for a year and a half. Nearly stayed, I loved it so much!

Bonus Cool-Climate Additions Across the Globe
- Scotland (The Highlands & Isle of Skye): Scotland rarely gets hot! Summer brings mild temperatures (around 15°C / 59°F), moody skies, waterfalls, and ancient castle ruins. (Just pack a little bug spray for the famous Scottish midges!).
- Pacific Northwest Coast (USA & Canada): Spots like Vancouver Island, Olympic National Park, or Haida Gwaii offer lush rainforests, cool Pacific sea fog, and breezy coastal beaches. I’m always happy to travel to the Canadian side of the PNW for your elopement; it’s my OG home and I love a good excuse to visit <3
